Chapter Seven

Ten days later, Royce headed up the seemingly endless stairs along the seats at the Bristol, Tennessee racing facility. He wanted to watch the truck practice session and scope out how Ethan was doing after their play session today. After Ethan’s fifth place finish at Michigan, with the fender intact, Royce wanted to see the rookie repeat his performance. Ethan could win if he put his mind to it.

Each night, he spent with Ethan, playing and teaching Ethan how to let go in a safe manner. Ethan seemed to be responding. His overall outlook had become more positive, and he smiled more. He raced like a champion. No tantrums or thrown objects after the race. Of course, he’d run the track cleanly. No one pissed him off or wrecked him.

Bristol would be the next challenge. No one got out of the bull ring without damage. Even the winning cars tended to have some dings on the fenders. Royce sighed. The trucks weren’t the only things likely to be wrecked. If he wasn’t careful, he’d lose his heart to Ethan and end up with his own damage.

Through all of the play and Ethan’s strides, something had niggled at Royce. Their conversation yesterday continued to bother him. Ethan’s grave face when he’d talked had said almost as much as his words.

I don’t know how to let go of my image. Sex is great and all, but people expect me to be the bad guy. They don’t want a watered down, mellow version of me. That image doesn’t sell. Besides, it’s easier to be bad. I cause trouble, people cheer and I dominate on the track. Most of the time it works for me. Sure, there are bad days, but everyone has those. The more I push it, the more I sell. Why change when being the tough guy who starts fights is what I’m best at?

Royce plopped down onto the nearest seat and propped his feet on the back of the chair in front of him. Nothing helped. Not the honesty, not the patience. Sure, they needed time, but come on. Ethan didn’t need to be the bad guy. He could still be tough and submissive at the same time.

What Ethan didn’t want to deal with was his fear. He understood the repercussions of being a submissive and liked giving away control, but the damn macho quotient, that’s what fucked him over. He feared the fans would see him as a wimp if he changed—even a little. Total bullshit. Ethan could be anything he wanted to on the track once he harnessed his recklessness.

Royce rubbed his temple. Changing Ethan wasn’t on his to-do list. His plan had always been to show Ethan the balance between submission and control. When they were together in the bedroom, Ethan understood. The moment they stepped out into public, Ethan slipped back into the jackass driver persona.

Maybe that was the key. Being himself. The cartoon character was easy. He could be an asshole and get away with everything stupid without having to worry because people expected him to be a shit.
